Due to the Carr family's commitment to the community, especially to youth with limited opportunities, Harry Carr's family donated the principal funding for our main Boathouse. The Harry Carr Memorial Boathouse at Community Boating Center, which serves as both a home for CBC's expanding programs, and as a tribute to the memory of an accomplished sailor, devoted family man, and concerned citizen of Rhode Island.

Harry Carr (1940-1999) was an avid sailor throughout his life, beginning with his childhood summers on Prudence Island. He took up the sport after a doctor recommended plenty of fresh air for a respiratory ailment, went on to win a number of Narragansett Bay championships in several classes of boats, and in adult life was a well known competitor on the international sailing scene.

In the 1970s he and his brother James took over the family business, H. Carr and Sons, a construction firm estabished by their grandfather, Harry Carr. While the firm retains its Rhode Island roots, its operations have spread throughout southern New England and now it employs over 700 people. Please join us in thanking H.
