CBC Youth Sailing Skill Levels

CBC instructors evaluate your child’s skill level each session. Once confident in the skills required, he/she will be advanced to the next level. Most students require at least two sessions per level prior to advancing. Everyone receives an award to display his/her achievement.

 1 – Green – SeaSteward

SeaStewards are “green” beginners introduced to the power of the wind and basic sailing skills. Students learn safety, nomenclature, rigging, sail handling, and steering a course. Going green starts ashore. SeaStewards explore how the environmental choices we make on land affect our impact on the sea.

2 – Blue – WaterWatcher

WaterWatchers learn reinforced basics and master upwind sailing, learn to navigate, read charts, anchor, and other skills needed to enjoy the freedom and excitement of blue-water sailing. Water covers over 70% of our “Blue” planet. WaterWatchers embrace the science of the sea and help protect it from seen and unseen threats.

3 – Yellow – SailingStar

These rising stars have a bright future. We’ll focus on sail trim and go-fast performance tips. It’s not unusual to find kids who never excelled in any other activity often “find their niche” in sailing. Global climate change affects local sailors. SaiilngStars have a vested interest in learning how current behavior will affect future outcomes.

4 – Orange – Instructor

Teaching is the ultimate way to give back to the sport. Those who share their passion for wind and sea and master the mechanics of sailing are rewarded with a new sense of self worth and accomplishment. Teaching is much more than sharing knowledge. Instructors serve as key environmental mentors and refine and explore skills and career paths.

5 – Red – Racer

We take the intimidation of complex rules and pressure out of the mix with an emphasis on fun. Racers learn tactics and strategies to establish competitive sailing as a lifelong interest. A “need for speed” hooks many sailors for life. Racers are the ultimate ambassadors for sailing and for protecting the waters we all sail on.

Please Note:
All class times and fees subject to change without notice.
All sailing and paddling privileges subject to weather and equipment availability.
