Captain David J. Allio Scholarship

Community Boating Center
KidSail & TeenSail Sailorships

The Captain David J. Allio Fund was established by the Allio family in memory of son and brother David, who as a boy took to sailing like a duck to water, and relished nautical adventures throughout his life.

David started sailing in a Sunfish on a serene Connecticut lake and spent most of his time on the water in his Cal 28 sloop Dulcinea, piloting to victories in the Duxbury MA Commodore’s Cup and a slew of other races. He embraced the technical challenges of sailing, but found beauty and solace in the open seas. He sailed Dulcinea single-handedly from New England to Puerto Rico, where he settled for three decades. From San Juan, he explored virtually every island in the Caribbean, earned his 25/50/100 Ton Master Captain’s license, and made several successful transatlantic crossings (with occasionally competent mates).

David preferred uncharted waters and set his own points of sail. His professional career was dynamic and multifaceted, ranging from finance and start-ups to branded beverage distribution. Impatient on land, he was generous and endlessly patient on the water, ever-ready to share his knowledge, culinary talents, and salty perspective.

He would have appreciated sponsoring intrepid young sailors who have vim, vigor, and a yearning for the open sea. This scholarship honors his memory, and is awarded annually to two deserving youths in the Center’s Learn to Sail program.
