Summer Camp

Our Summer Camp format offers great opportunities for fun and growth with a highly structured curriculum that allows stepped progression through a variety of opportunities for beginner, racing or cruising minded sailors.

COVID-19 Update

We are currently accepting applications for our summer camps.
There has never been a more important time to offer youth healthy, outdoor activities to relieve stress, socialize, and provide much-needed fun, learning structure and exercise. Sailing and paddling are inherently social-distancing. Enhanced with new rules and procedures based upon best practices, we look forward to opening 6/29 under the guidance and approval of our greatly appreciated state and local leadership.

Guidelines For Summer Camp

NEW – Please Bring:
– Good Health – Don’t come if you are sick: COVID-19 Screening Tool
– Lifejacket (limited, assigned PFDs available): West Marine, MTI Lifejackets
– Backpack or duffel (labeled with name)
– Cloth face mask (and a spare!) – worn at drop-off/pick-up & restrooms:
Sailing neck gaiters
– Hand sanitizer
– Water bottle (filled with water)
– Sunscreen (not to be shared)
– Lunch (all trash is pack-in/pack-out)
– Closed-toe shoes (no bare feet or flip-flops)

NEW – Inclement Weather:
We all know it’s not easy running a summer camp this year (or being a parent/guardian) – but we are thrilled to be able to get your children out of the house and offer an exciting outdoor experience. When the sun is shining (or mostly shining) sailing and paddling in the Ocean State is hard to beat. However, days that are forecast to be all-day storm events can be challenging for our indoor capacity. If you are in a position to keep your child home on bad weather days (forecast and communicated by us at least a day ahead) we would appreciate your flexibility in helping us reduce the number of youth on-site that day. We understand this is not ideal, and may not be possible for some families, but appreciate your help and understanding.

COVID-19 Considerations
Our detailed plan includes but is not limited to: Health screenings and hand washing, cloth masks, regular disinfection of all surfaces, six-foot distancing when possible, maximizing time outdoors, restricting mixing of groups and visitors, staggering drop-offs and pickups, limiting sharing of materials and disinfecting them in between use, and small cohorts of youth engaged in staggered, engaging outdoor activities. View our COVID-19 Control Plan.

Please share our many healthy, summer outdoor youth sailing and paddling camps and lesson opportunities with your friends, neighbors, and colleagues with kids (and adults) looking to get outside, have fun, and enjoy an Ocean State adventure right in your own backyard.

EcoAdventure Skills Progression

CBC instructors evaluate your child’s skill level each session. Once confident in the skills required, he/she will be advanced to the next level. Most students require at least two, 1-week sessions per level prior to advancing.

SeaSteward
Going green starts ashore. SeaStewards explore how the environmental choices we make on land affect our impact on the sea.
WaterWatcher
Water covers over 70% of our “Blue” planet. WaterWatchers embrace the science of the sea and help protect it from seen and unseen threats.
SailingStar
Global climate change affects local sailors. SailingStars have a vested interest in learning how current behavior will affect future outcomes.
Instructor
Teaching is much more than sharing knowledge. Instructors serve as key environmental mentors and refine and explore skills and career paths.
Ambassador
Sailors are the ultimate ambassadors for the sport and for protecting the waters we all sail on.

Learn To Sail Skills Progression

CBC instructors evaluate your child’s skill level each session. Once confident in the skills required, he/she will be advanced to the next level. Most students require at least two, 2-week sessions per level prior to advancing. Everyone receives an award to display his/her achievement.

Green – Beginner
“Green” beginners introduced to the power of the wind and basic sailing skills. Students learn safety, nomenclature, rigging, sail handling, and steering a course.
Blue – Intermediate
Learn reinforced basics and master upwind sailing, learn to navigate, read charts, anchor, and other skills needed to enjoy the freedom and excitement of blue-water sailing.
Yellow – Advanced
These rising stars have a bright future. We’ll focus on sail trim and go-fast performance tips. It’s not unusual to find kids who never excelled in any other activity often “find their niche” in sailing.
Orange – Jr. Instructor
Teaching is the ultimate way to give back to the sport. Those who share their passion for wind and sea and master the mechanics of sailing are rewarded with a new sense of self worth and accomplishment.
Red – Racing
We take the intimidation of complex rules and pressure out of the mix with an emphasis on fun. Racers learn tactics and strategies to establish competitive sailing as a lifelong interest. A “need for speed” hooks many sailors for life.

Sailorships

“Sailorships” for reduced tuition are offered to qualified youth. Application forms available online, for download, or at CBC.
