CBC sailing lessons allow you to learn an exciting new sport, advance your skill level, meet new people, or just experience the peace and relaxation that only sailing has to offer.
We are currently accepting applications for our adult evening lessons.
There has never been a more important time to offer healthy, outdoor activities to relieve stress, socialize, and provide much-needed fun, learning structure and exercise. Please share our many healthy, summer outdoor sailing and paddling lesson opportunities with your friends, neighbors, and colleagues looking to get outside, have fun, and enjoy an Ocean State adventure right in your own backyard.
Why Sit In Traffic When You Can “Stay and Play” on the Water?
While we are currently experiencing only minor traffic delays during peak times, we understand your frustration! Take advantage of our very affordable adult sailing and paddling options to “stay and play” after work to help provide a buffer for those “unexpected” delays with Washington Bridge traffic.
Please Bring:
– Good Health – Do not come if you or are sick
– Lifejacket (limited, assigned PFDs available): West Marine, MTI Lifejackets
– Backpack or duffel (labeled with name)
– Hand sanitizer
– Water bottle (filled with water)
– Sunscreen (not to be shared)
– Closed-toe shoes (no bare feet or flip-flops)

Although membership to CBC is required to take lessons, access to our boats is completely FREE for adults upon lesson completion. Our multiple sessions make it easy to create a custom, progressive learning schedule, or mesh with your work/vacation plans.
Adult Summer Classes
Our adult lesson format offers great opportunities for learning and growth with a highly structured curriculum that allows stepped progression through a variety of opportunities for beginner, racing or cruising minded sailors.

Adult lessons are offered in pre-season, and six (6) summer sessions throughout the sailing season. Most classes are offered on Mon/Wed or Tues/Thurs. Beginner Sailing I
Enjoy an Ocean State sailing adventure — right in your own backyard! Have fun, learn a lifetime skill, and meet new people. If you enjoy the outdoors, wind in your face, and the sound of moving water, this class is your link to the sailing world. Learn safety, rigging, sail trim, and steering. Once confident in sailing basics, you’re ready to advance to Beginner II.
- Classroom and on-the-water, taught in 14’ RS Quests
- Prerequisite: CBC membership, enthusiasm
- Course goal: CBC Green rating for open sailing
- Course fee: $385 (meets 2 days/ wk. for 3 wks.)

Beginner Sailing II
Progress to more refined sailing skills. The underlying approach in all classes is to ensure that students enjoy both the challenge and fun of sailing and to instill the principals of sailing safety, confidence, and self-reliance. We’ll reinforce the basics learned in Beginner I, and master the skills of upwind sailing, boat handling, and heavy-air techniques.
- Classroom and on-the-water, taught in 14’ RS Quests
- Prerequisite: CBC membership, Beginner I
- Course goal: CBC Blue rating for extended sailing range
- Course fee: $385 (meets 2 days/ wk. for 3 wks.)

Challenge Tests
All members must pass an on the water skills test to sail or paddle each type of boat* you wish to sail. Students will be evaluated in class.
- On-the water, boat of your choice (*excluding keelboats)
- Prerequisite: CBC trial membership, Proficiency (pre-screening evaluation given)
- Course goal: Quick check-out for experienced sailors
- Course fee: FREE quick check-out for experienced boaters

CHG, 5/28 – 10/13, weekends, 1:30, 3:30, & 5:30 PM
Mini-Courses
Join us for a weekly review of gear, rigging, and basic boat handling including tacking, gybing, starting, stopping, docking, rules, and safety.
- Prerequisite: CBC membership
- Course goal: Quick check-out for experienced sailors
- Course fee: $40 (check weekly postings for topics)

Private Lessons
Available at $75/ hr. with a required two-hour minimum per session.*. Each session is tailored to your unique needs. Suggested topics:

- Paddling Basics – Intro to sit-on-top kayaks and paddling strokes
- Refresher – Jump start your season with a rigging/sailing review
